Summer 2010: What I'm reading

What if your middle school teacher hates you? Holling Hoodhood is pretty sure that his 7th grade teacher despises him, and she's out to get him -- whether it's by volunteering that he'll clean all the blackboard erasers in the entire middle school or by sending him out to play soccer with the meanest kids in school.

It's the late 1960s, and the war in Vietnam is on everyone's mind, including twelve-year old Holling Hoodhood. That is, when he's not worried about Mrs. Baker's plot against him and the Shakespeare plays she has assigned him to read. Just when you think it couldn't get worse for Holling, it does.

A coming-of-age novel that's hysterical and bittersweet at the same time. Wednesday Wars is written from a male perspective. It's a great novel for anyone who roots for the underdog.

A Newberry Award winner...
